At the same time in which globalization leads to the fall of borders and favors mobility, we can see the occurrence of numerous conflicts that are amplified with this phenomenon, such as great political disputes over power, intolerance of all kinds and social inequalities.
Based on major events in the world, it is fundamental to cultivate in students the disposition toward and culture of peace. Therefore, students are encouraged to think creatively, innovatively and peacefully, collaborating to form a universal network of actions and dialogue that prioritizes respect for different ways of thinking.
As an institution, the Global Network of RSHM Schools has a connection to an important international organization: The United Nations (UN). The Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary became affiliated with the United Nations in 2006 as a non-governmental organization (NGO) associated with the UN Department of Public Information, extending the influence of the Institute’s mission “That All May Have Life” to a global level. In 2013, the RSHM NGO applied for and was granted Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), enabling participation in UN sessions and the presentation of written and oral testimony to influence policy in the work for justice on behalf of those who are poor and marginalized, especially women and children.
Represented by Sister Verônica Brand of the Zambezi Regional Government, the RSHM NGO is a member of different committees such as Poverty, Eradication and Social Development. The aim is to overcome the problems of countries in which the Sisters are present as an Institute. Thus, the NGO seeks dialogue with governments, proposes social solutions and contributes to the development of public policies.
Every month, Sister Veronica sends a newsletter written in English and Portuguese with information about her work as the RSHM NGO at the UN. Click here to access the “News from the UN” newsletters.
