Marymount Barranquilla
Barranquilla - Colombia

Originally founded in 1953 as a girls’ school by Mother Annunciata Uribe-Holguin, RSHM, Marymount Barranquilla is a private, Catholic, co-educational nursery through high school college preparatory institution located on Colombia’s northern coast. The school is owned and operated by a local non-profit board of trustees called Corporación Marymount, (“CORMARY”), and has an average co-ed enrollment of 1,000 students. It is approved by the Colombian Secretary of Education and internationally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), and the Council of International Schools (CIS). During the 2017-18 academic year, Marymount Barranquilla became a Cambridge International School.

Marymount students take an English immersion program in the preschool and then follow a combined Colombian and international curriculum from first grade on. French, as a third language is part of the middle and high school curriculum as preparation for the DELF exams and certificates. High school students are encouraged to take College Board Advanced Placement courses and exams. All of Marymount’s graduates pursue undergraduate studies in Colombia, the United States, Canada, and European Countries.

Since 1957, Marymount’s main campus had been located on two city blocks in a busy, congested residential section of Barranquilla. But in 2017, the main campus was sold, and construction of the new school was begun on a 100-acre site approximately twenty minutes away in Sabanilla. In February 2018, the middle and high school students and teachers along with the administrative staff moved into their modern, new building of well-designed spaces for life-long learning and community living, outfitted with the furniture, equipment, and technology necessary to develop XXI century skills, global competence and entrepreneurial leadership founded on Catholic principles. The new elementary building and a temporary Chapel in Sabanilla will be ready before the beginning of the 2019-20 academic year. The preschool will remain for a few more years at its current site in the city close to the homes of our youngest students.
